Mongu Airport upgrades spark fresh call to market Western Province
The Western Province administration has welcomed the recent renovations at Mongu Airport, describing the upgraded facility as a major boost to the region’s tourism and investment prospects.
The airport, operated by Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL), has undergone improvements that now place it among the country’s well-equipped regional airports.
Provincial Permanent Secretary Mr. Simomo Akapelwa has since urged ZACL, the Zambia Tourism Agency (ZTA) and private stakeholders to work together in aggressively marketing Mongu and the wider Western Province as a viable destination.
He noted with concern that despite the modern facilities now in place, the airport is yet to attract regular commercial flights.
Mr. Akapelwa said Government had invested in upgrading the airport to secure not only the infrastructure but also flights and passengers, adding that the absence of commercial operations undermines the intended economic benefits.
He stressed that Mongu Airport remains a strategic gateway to the province’s rich tourism portfolio.
Western Province is home to iconic attractions such as the Liuwa Plain National Park, famous for Africa’s second-largest wildebeest migration, the majestic Sioma Ngwezi National Park, the annual Kuomboka Traditional Ceremony, the scenic Zambezi floodplains, and pristine wetlands that support diverse birdlife.
He expressed confidence that with coordinated marketing and airline engagement, Mongu Airport can unlock tourism growth and stimulate local development across the province.
