Minister inspects newly upgraded Nchelenge Harbour

Government has invested heavily in the upgrade and modernization of the transport and logistics sector in the country. This includes road, rail, air, and marine transport. Following the decentralisation policy of devolving functions to Local Authorities, Government disbursed Twenty Million Kwacha (K20,000,000.00) to Nchelenge Town Council towards development of harbour infrastructure at Mweru Water Transport.

The project involved the following completion of 24-metre Landing Jetty, rehabilitation of a retaining wall and embarkment, a stepped stone masonry sand view terrace, main approach road, pathways and a carpark at Mweru Water Transport in Nchelenge District of Luapula Province. The project aims to improve inland water transport infrastructure on Lake Mweru, which is critical for the movement of people, goods, and services.

It is expected to facilitate safer and more efficient docking and loading operations. The project is also expected to promote tourism and economic activity in Nchelenge District. Further, it will improve connectivity between islands and mainland communities. And lastly, the project will support the Government’s rural development and transport integration agenda.

On 4th November 2025, Minister of Transport and Logistics Hon. Musea Frank Tayali visited the project to appreciate works done so far. The works were 100% complete. However, the marine vessel, Kapale, needs immediate attention as it has broken down.
