A natural feature, the Siavonga Harbour serves a diverse community in the district. On September 26, 2025, Minister of Transport Ands Logistics Hon. Frank Tayali announced plans by the Government to establish harbours across the country, including along the shores of Lake Kariba in Siavonga, Sinazongwe, and Gwembe districts.
He said construction of these harbours in the three districts is scheduled to begin in 2026.
Hon. Tayali revealed that the consultant has submitted pre-feasibility studies and preliminary designs, which have since been approved. He said the estimated construction costs for each harbour are as follows, Siavonga K40 million, Chipepo (Gwembe) K18 million, and Sinazongwe K34 million.
This was in response to a question from Gwembe Member of Parliament Tyson Simuzingili, who wanted clarification on whether the government had plans to construct harbours, the expected starting date, and the costs involved.
Already, the marine vessel – Delta – donated to Zambia Postal Services by the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, is serving its intended purpose.
It is the only government vessel servicing thew public at the moment.
Private vessels are also there providing competition to the Delta from the market share.
The 24-seater vessel goes to Siamatuba island one a week, the furthest destination in the voyage.
And it takes three (3) to four (4) hours to sail to the island.
“Zampost’s Delta vessel is in fact the safest of them all. It goes on Tuesday and is expected to return on Wednesdays,” explains Siavonga Postmaster Mweemba Chilyango.
