The recent upgrade of Kasama Airport to support regional connectivity and enhance access to the northern region has cheered travelers in and out of the Northern Province.
The upgrade that saw the new runway of up to three (3) kilometres, airfield ground lighting and proper apron, has attracted increased flights from once to three times a week, with Proflight as the main carrier.
In the first half of 2025, the airport recorded 396 aircraft movement transporting 7,126 passengers.
Dr. Agness Ntine, a medical doctor at Mporokoso District Hospital, could not hide the pleasure brought about by the regular flights.
“It’s easy for us to get to Lusaka when we have a meeting there. It is a short drive from Mporokoso to Kasama and we easily fly out for the events and back. Right now, I am going to Lusaka and I will be there in just about two hours,” she said.
And Seetharaman Vewicatesh, Chief Executive Officer of DS Agronomy, a farming outfit with about 7,000 hectors of agriculture production in Muchinga and the Northern provinces.
He said the company wants to help in employment creation in the northern region, thereby contributing to the growth of the Zambian economy.
Mr. Vewicatesh said so far, the firm has already developed 150 hectares and is working on developing another 500 hectares.
He said through innovation, DS Agronomy is introducing new crops for export, thereby employing young Zambian graduates.
Meanwhile, MTN Zambia Northern Regional Commercial Head Belekia Sakala said for people whose jobs involve a lot of travelling, the regular flights make it easier for them to deliver on duties.
Mr. Sakala called decision makers to consider introducing a direct flight from Kasama to Ndola as there is demand for the route.
