Northern Province Minister Leonard Mbao has applauded Transport and Logistics Minister Museba F. Tayali for his efforts to revitalise the Mpulungu Port.
In a recent interview in Mpulungu, Hon. Mbao said Hon. Tayali has made the best pronouncement on Mpulungu to the effect that Government is looking at the possibility of building ships at the harbour to level up with the surrounding neighbours.
He said Hon. Tayali‘s pronouncement that he will lobby the Ministry of Finance and National Planning to zero-rate ship manufacturing material so that the vessels can be manufactured locally will change the profile of the district and the province as a whole.
Hon. Mbao said the speed at which the Minister of Transport and Logistics pushed for the upgrade of the Kasama Airport was impressive.
He said the upgrade of the airport has seen a significant increase in the arrivals into the province.
Hon. Mabo said the New Dawn Government under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema is proving to be a game changer considering how the ‘giant’ had been sleeping for the longest time.
He said Government wants to convert the story about the province’s potential to actualise the endowment that will change the lives of people.
During his tour of Mpulungu Harbour in September, Hon. Tayali said he will propose to the Ministry of Finance to zero-rate, in the 2026 national budget, importation of equipment and materials needed for building ships and other marine vessels.
He said Government can help reduce competition by lowering the cost of transportation, which includes extending the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) line to Mpulungu Harbour from Nseluka.
Kalambo Falls: a major reason to visit Mbala
As Government is working hard to make the Northern Circuit as accessible as possible, and as a get way to the Great Lakes Region through intermodular transport system, there is need to note some of the key destinations in the naturally endowed regions.
